Pope Julius II declared today’s date the feast of the Holy Shroud. The Shroud is a linen sheet, of Palestinian origin, on which appears the image of a flogged and crucified man. It has been the subject of numerous scientific and interdisciplinary investigations ever since May of 1898 when the photographer Secondo Pia discovered that the image on the Shroud is in the form of a photographic negative. Although the Shroud’s historical authenticity is the subject of intense debate, the Catholic Church treats it as a precious icon and a likely relic of the passion and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth.
