Pope Benedict XIV (Prospero Lambertini) died in Rome. A patron of the arts and sciences, he is remembered for his numerous and lavish donations on behalf of the arts and sciences and for enhancing the Academy of Sciences in Bologna. He established a procedure for recognizing miracles during the causes of canonization, employing several scientific criteria whose value remain significant today.
